Enhanced Picture Quality Improves DVD Player Experience

Zoran Corporation (Nasdaq: ZRAN) announced it is supplying its Vaddis® 966 DVD processor & HDXtreme®2 1080p HDMI transmitter with integrated upconverter to Samsung Electronics for its new DVD-HD1080P7 player model.

“We selected Zoran’s Vaddis® 966 multimedia processor plus the HDXtreme®2 upscaler for our third generation of high definition DVD player models because of our success with the previous generations of Vaddis®-based players and HDXtreme® scalers. With these new models, Samsung has boosted its offering to consumers to full 1080p high definition resolution along with the highest quality audio and video performance available in today’s DVD players. Zoran’s quality products and excellent development support for our product line enabled us to quickly bring these new models to market,” said Mr. Mangyu Yim, Vice President Digital AV Division, Samsung Electronics.

“Zoran is pleased to continue our long-term support for Samsung and to deliver our fully digital end-to-end Vaddis® 9 DVD multimedia processor and high definition upscaler for its next generation of DVD players. Enhanced picture quality in the Samsung players is enabled by Zoran’s Single Pixel Processing™ (SPP) progressive scan technology. Samsung’s significant strength in the consumer electronics market enables the latest improvements in technology to be delivered in DVD player products to millions of homes worldwide,” said Ram Ofir, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Home Entertainment division, Zoran Corporation.

Samsung’s new players, currently shipping to retail outlets, offer the latest multimedia capabilities for DVD products. When connected to an HDTV via the HDMI connection, the DVD player digitally “up-converts” the resolution of standard DVD video to 720p/1080i/1080p high definition for sharper images. A variety of disc formats are supported: DVD Video, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R/RW, MP3, MPEG4, WMA and JPEG. Additional features include HDMI Digital Interface with CEC (Consumer Electronic Control) and Progressive Scan output where DVD video is delivered in an enhanced definition format.

Zoran developed and delivered the first HDMI-enabled DVD players in 2004, powered by its Vaddis DVD processor and HDXtreme upscaler. Today these new generations of players use the latest HDXtreme®2 upscaler a companion chip for the Vaddis®8 and Vaddis®9 DVD processors with 1080p HDMI support. They also incorporate Zoran’s SPP™ up-conversion technology for viewing optimum video images.
