ROTTERDAM, Netherlands — Tiledmedia, specialist provider of video streaming technology, is using IBC 2024 (stand 5.C90 – AWS D2C zone) to showcase its pioneering Tiledmedia Player, and demonstrate how it can help video streaming services stand out in today’s crowded and fragmented media entertainment market.
Tiledmedia Player, the company’s flagship solution, enables ‘tiled streaming’ whereby a streamed video transmission can be divided into discrete smaller ‘tiles,’ then streamed individually, yet simultaneously decoded to create a mosaic of live action on-screen feeds.
“We are the only video player that’s multi-stream at heart,” says Rob Koenen, Tiledmedia Co-founder and Chief Business Officer, explaining that inherent and inbuilt multi-stream capability is what differentiates Tiledmedia Player from all others in the marketplace.
IBC 2024 – Entering the spotlight
While Tiledmedia has been successfully supporting high-profile customers since 2017, the company is now using IBC 2024 to launch the Tiledmedia Player more widely to the global video entertainment community: “We’re now coming out of the shadows,” says Koenen.
“There’s growing awareness in our industry of the importance of selecting the right video A screenshot of a video gameplayer to deliver the quality of experience today’s consumers expect,” he says.
“In today’s tough, competitive market, it’s more important than ever for streaming providers to choose technologies that ensure a service is future-ready and poised to deliver an ever-improving user experience,” he says.
Tiledmedia Player’s sophisticated Multiview capability is attractive to broadcasters who wish to show multiple video streams simultaneously. This is particularly applicable for sports where the live competitive action takes place across a wide physical area, such as with motorsport, road racing, cycling, golf or equestrian sports.
This capability is also required when streaming events with simultaneous co-located sporting performances. Viewers may be keen to see competition at different points within an arena or sportsground, such as with track and field, gymnastics championships and tennis tournaments, among others. Another example is enabling Multiview streaming of a football tournament’s group stages.
Tiledmedia’s advanced video player technology lets viewers select specific streams focusing on their favourite stars, in addition to the scenes the director offers. The viewer may choose to watch the competitive tussles taking place in the far reaches of a racetrack, for example. Viewers can enjoy action from various points in the field of play, displayed onscreen side-by-side, empowering the viewer select a focus, or even camera angle.
A different approach that yields efficiencies
Empowering streamers to reap maximum Return on Investment for their broadcasting rights is Tiledmedia’s raison d’etre.
“In recent years, sports broadcasters have been demonstrating huge commitment to technological innovation, harnessing state-of-the-art solutions to engage viewers more deeply by helping them see more of the action as it happens,” says Koenen.
Instead of bolting Multiview capability on top of platform-native players, Tiledmedia Player stands apart because it is independent of platform-native players. Tiledmedia Player was created as a standalone solution: In Koenen’s words, “we built it as a multi-stream player from the ground up.”
The same video player runs on all device platforms, with 100% of the code controlled by Tiledmedia. So launching new and compelling user experiences on a range of consumer devices is dramatically accelerated. This includes all Apple and Android devices (tablets, smartphones, TV dongles, etc.), web browsers, and XR headsets, among others.
Furthermore, using a single cross-platform codebase greatly speeds up integration with other system components, such as analytics and client-side ad insertion.
This means that service providers can roll out multi-platform service innovations, grow audiences, and earn new revenues, faster than otherwise possible. Meanwhile, sports fans can begin to enjoy new and engaging user experiences on all the devices they love.
The right video player can make all the difference
Tiledmedia Player has been deployed by sports rightsholders Including blue-chip broadcasters, streamers, and sports associations, in various international markets.
The solution is highly responsive, and viewers can experience seamless Multiview without any fear of missing out. Switching feeds is instant, and frictionless with frame-accurate cross-feed synchronisation, and audio is uninterrupted.
“We stream what you see at the resolution in which you see it, with the required bandwidth and image resolution dynamically assigned. This eliminates bandwidth wastage for the service provider, resulting in more efficient distribution, and better enjoyment for viewers,” Koenen explains.
He points out that service providers not only benefit from delivering a consistent user experience across all device platforms, but that using a single player also allows optimising the total cost of transcoding ownership by eliminating the necessity of doing multiple encoding and packaging formats.
Tiledmedia Player’s Multiview offers additional revenue opportunities through content-aware, personalised multiview ad insertion. In Koenen’s words, the opportunity is “a fast-developing new advertising paradigm for which we have only begun to scratch the surface in terms of monetisation potential.”
Leveraging VR expertise
Tiledmedia’s track record includes devising and deploying an end-to-end solution for live VR360 and VR180 sports experiences at the highest possible quality, to mobile devices and headsets. Tiledmedia Player’s multi-stream capability efficiently streams only what the user sees in their VR viewport.
“We’re extremely excited about IBC 2024 and very much look forward to getting together with partners and customers, while reaching out to new audiences, ambitious TV and streaming providers who are committed to delivering next-level, high octane entertainment,” says Koenen.
