MultiRights Enables Transparent Rights Management for Retail Consumer Devices as Component of Next-Generation IPTV Platform

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands — IBC 2009, Stand #5.B45 — Verimatrix, setting the standard in content security technologies that enhance the value of pay-TV networks, today announced integration of single content authority support for the Open IPTV Forum’s (OIPF) Marlin digital rights management (DRM) standard. As a component of the Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS™) 3.0 release, the company’s MultiRights™ technology enables transparent rights management across a range of off-the-shelf devices for streamlined multi-network and multi-device operations.

In a joint showcase effort with the OIPF and as a key partner in leading telecom supplier Ericsson’s IPTV ecosystem, Verimatrix will be demonstrating OIPF licensing, sharing and re-distribution of Marlin protected video content over managed and unmanaged networks and between multiple devices. The demo underscores the commitment to develop standard-based end-to-end IPTV solutions that encourage growth of innovation and time to market. Attendees can view the demo at Verimatrix’s stand (5.B45) during exhibition hours at IBC 2009.

Emerging video delivery formats, like adaptive rate streaming, and the growth of unmanaged network delivery, such as over the top (OTT), are presenting new opportunities for pay-TV operators to reach beyond their managed networks, particularly as mobile TV becomes a more viable channel. MultiRights mediates different DRM technologies on multiple devices through a single set of subscriber entitlements interfaces and Web services APIs. Verimatrix’s single content authority and entitlement process is able to deliver licenses in whatever DRM format the requesting user device requires. The support of the Marlin standard is one key proof-of-concept for the MultiRights approach.

“Our MultiRights demonstration is well timed with market forces to help pay-TV operators extend their networks. Proving that a single content authority platform can support multi-screen revenue generating services is a major milestone for Verimatrix and the industry,” said Steve Oetegenn, chief sales and marketing officer, Verimatrix. “We are proud to leverage our progressive partner ecosystem and consortium memberships to propel the IPTV industry forward.”
