Dutch digital TV connections are more than 5 million

Most consumers receive digital TV via cable networks. Cable accounted for 54.8 percent of digital TV connections, up by 0.4 percentage points during the quarter. IPTV, delivered over ADSL and Fibre networks, also increased its share of the digital TV market, by 2.3 percent year-on-year to 8.3 percent.

Satellite saw its digital TV market share drop by 0.7 percent to 19.2 percent, and digital terrestrial TV lost 0.3 points during the quarter, to account for 17.7 percent of digital users.

“At the moment, digital penetration on cable networks is more than 50 percent. We are expecting the number of total digital TV connections will be between 5.3 and 5.4 million at the end of this year” according to Kamiel Albrecht.

On the digital TV market, cable operator Ziggo is the largest provider with a market share of 33.2 percent. KPN consolidated its position as the second-largest digital TV provider in the Netherlands, ending June 2010 with 21.5 percent of the digital TV market, followed by satellite TV provider Canal Digitaal and Liberty Global cable provider UPC. They have both a market share of 16.4 percent. UPC gained 0.3 points coming from 16.1 percent during the first quarter of 2010 and Canal Digitaal lost share, dropped 0.5 percent since 31 March.
