Worldwide Consumer Electronics Leader Integrates VCAS Security on Range of Advanced Devices

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands — IBC 2011 — Verimatrix, the specialist in securing and enhancing revenue for multi-screen digital TV services around the globe, today announced a broad partnership with LG Electronics (KSE: 066570) that enables versatile software-based security for premium IP video services across a wide range of connected TVs and other CE devices. The range of LG Smart TV devices, which includes 2011 and 2012 LED LCD Smart TVs, the Smart TV Upgrader, and connected Blu-ray™ players, will offer embedded ViewRight® Web and ViewRight IPTV client security and help to enable a broader range of premium digital TV options from current and new service operators.

This level of integration delivers an impressive Smart TV user experience, capable of unifying an operator’s premium video-on-demand (VOD) services, online video and social networking via customized interactive TV applications. The integrated VCAS security enables device authentication and fine grain entitlement management across the full range of linear and on-demand IPTV and Internet TV services, unified with the operator’s existing pay TV subscriber management system and service provisioning systems.

“It’s become increasingly important for CE devices to directly support the new service delivery models of both regional and global digital TV service operators, including enabling IPTV and OTT content,” stated Young-jae Seo, vice president in charge of LG’s Smart TV team, LG Electronics. “As a clear leader in revenue security for IP-enabled service around the globe, Verimatrix becomes a natural partner for the next stage of the connected TV evolution.”

The LG Smart TV Solution for Pay TV Operators gives multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) access to a powerful services platform on which they can integrate traditional high-quality pay TV content with today’s sought-after broadband services, delivering unprecedented value to new and existing subscribers.

The Verimatrix Content Authority System (VCAS™) for Internet TV, together with VCAS™ for IPTV, provide a complete digital TV security solution for IP video services. As operators work on upgrades to their network architectures, IP-enabled services are an important aspect of the enhanced value that can be created, both to reach additional screens of their current subscribers and to extend their service umbrella more broadly. When it is possible to target connected TV and other consumer electronic devices with existing IP-based services, such an upgrade becomes extremely compelling.

“Connected TV platforms are very important for the digital TV services of the future. When a major CE vendor can offer a combination of standards-based delivery support and robust security, existing service operators have a very effective solution to deploy to their subscribers,” said Steve Oetegenn, chief sales and marketing officer at Verimatrix. “With a combination of IPTV and Internet TV security support, the LG Smart TV platform becomes a very versatile enabler of advanced digital TV services.”
