Cooperation Rapidly Brings Set-Top Box Solutions With HbbTV Support to the European Pay-TV Operator Market

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — IBC2012, Entropic Meeting Suite G106/107 — Entropic Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, announced today that by working with IP4.tv GmbH, a leading European manufacturer of next-generation hybrid set-top boxes, the Company has successfully achieved Common Interface Plus (CI+) certification for IP4.tv’s latest IP+DVB-S2 Hybrid set-top box (STB). This particular STB is aimed at the Pay-TV operator market and was deployed with a major European operator in August 2012.

The IP4.tv STB leverages the power of Entropic’s PNX84xx STB system-on-a-chip (SoC) with support for CI+ certification to enable Pay-TV operators to securely deliver HD premium broadcast and IP content between a Conditional Access Module (CAM) and IP4.tv’s hybrid STB.

“Our relationship with Entropic has increased our ability to support the level of authentication and encryption needed to secure HD channels between the CAM and our set-top boxes. In fact, without Entropic’s support it would have been impossible to meet the tight timescales involved with our recent European Pay-TV operator deployment,” said Christof Winker, CEO of IP4.tv. “By achieving CI+ certification, we have now opened up several major opportunities in the European Pay-TV operator market and can quickly respond with new secure set-top box solutions for the HbbTV market.”

The adoption of HbbTV in Europe continues to increase and will require secure CI+ STBs as consumers desire to access new services – including catch-up TV, video on demand (VoD), interactive advertising, among other program-related services such as digital text and electronic program guides.

“Our work with IP4.tv reinforces the strength and power our set-top box system-on-a-chip solutions bring to the DVB and hybrid set-top box market,” said Mark Samuel, senior vice president, Set-top Box Group, Entropic Communications. “In working with partners like IP4.tv, we are able to optimize our technology to the fullest extent and fuel the next-generation of devices that bridge content to the consumer and elevate consumers’ ability to securely watch and access their personalized multimedia content.”
