Telefónica takes the lead in pay TV subscribers in Spain

Spain’s Markets and Competition Commission (Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia – CNMC) has published telecommunications and audiovisual statistics for the country for the fourth quarter of 2014.

In the quarter, total pay TV subscribers rose by 350,000 to pass the 5 million mark for the first time, driven once again almost entirely by growth in IPTV subscribers. Year-on-year, the market grew by 1.2 million subscribers, with Telefónica (Movistar TV) overtaking DTS (Canal+) to become the pay TV leader, adding 1.14 million over the preceding 12 months. IPTV is now the largest pay TV segment in terms of subscriber numbers in Spain.
