LINKÖPING, Sweden — 27m Technologies has been selected by GS Group as the design house to create the first set-top box, under the brand “General Satellite”, based on their custom made System-in-Package (SiP). The SiP is designed and manufactured by GS Nanotech – one of the leading providers of semiconductor design, assembly and testing services in Eastern Europe.
The SiP consist of an STMicroelectronics-based set-top box chip, a conditional access CPU and a flash memory. The first product will be a satellite STB for the Russian market and it will be a cost-efficient addition to the family of set-top box models already manufactured by General Satellite. 27m will design and validate the new set-top box, and will also port the existing SW stack, called Stingray, to the new platform.
The new SiP-based STB will be manufactured in the Technipolis GS*) area in Gusev, Kaliningrad. Mass production is planned for Q3 2014.
* GS Group is the developer and investor of the first Russian private technopolis – the project of “Technopolis GS” in Gusev in the Kaliningrad region of Russia. “Technopolis GS” is a place for scientific and technical development which includes five factories, a scientific research centre in the field of microelectronics, an educational centre, a residential area for 4.4 thousand people and a complex of social and entertainment infrastructure.
GS Group is the only Russian STB producer and the production volume is over 3 million STBs annually.
