HORSHAM, Pa. — Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today launched remote device management for its IPTV set-tops. Motorola’s NBBS device management system will now enable service providers to accelerate the delivery of personal media experiences with new services, improved customer satisfaction and lower operational costs with fewer truck rolls.
Motorola NBBS is a scaleable, carrier-grade software platform that enables operators to remotely access, configure, monitor and troubleshoot a full portfolio of consumer devices, home networks and services. These include gateways, modems, webcams and now IP set-tops – namely, the VIP set-top series, adding more flexibility for service providers. The NBBS platform increases revenues by accelerating new service introduction.
“Today’s technology consumers are increasingly in need of experiences that are seamless and hassle free,” said Matt Healey, IDC research manager, Software and Hardware Support Services. “Adding remote management and support capabilities to growing technologies like IPTV help operators focus on the end-user experience, which is critical to ensuring customer satisfaction.”
IDC forecasts the worldwide market for clientless remote support services tools is expected to grow from $126.1 million in 2007 to $335.7 million in 2012 at compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.6 percent.[1]
Motorola’s VIP set-top platform encompasses a robust line of all-IP or hybrid high definition and standard definition set-tops with built-in digital video recorders for diversified programming options, interactivity and video on demand for TV viewers. The VIP set-tops also support a variety of home-networking interfaces and the KreaTV™ application development environment, which enables features such as NBBS, advanced interactive applications, and third-party middleware solutions.
NBBS helps eliminate provisioning errors and customer frustration by automating the provisioning and management process for a wide range of devices with easy, zero-touch installation. NBBS then provides ongoing management and support for its IP customer premises equipment (CPE). This gives operators a high degree of network flexibility by enabling support teams to quickly resolve technical difficulties and providing tools to manage individual subscribers as well as system-wide campaigns.
“Our goal in introducing the NBBS platform to Motorola’s IP services suite is to offer our operator customers added value in the form of built-in installation and troubleshooting capabilities,” said Alan Lefkof, corporate vice president and general manager, Broadband Solutions Group, Motorola. “With the flexibility of the VIP platform, this integrated remote device management benefits operators from an efficiency and economic standpoint, and it gives consumers a seamless, hands-off role in enabling their video and interactive experiences.”
The NBBS platform supports multiple protocols such as TR-069, telnet and HTTP management interfaces for seamless integration into service providers’ existing networks, including provisioning, billing and customer support across multi-vendor CPE. NBBS is also compatible with WiMAX and femtocell CPE.
