InterDigital Demonstrates Perceptual Pre-Processing at CableLabs Summer Conference

  • Video Solution Enables up to 45 Percent Bandwidth Savings for Television Service Providers, OTT Content Providers and Encoding Vendors

WILMINGTON, Del. — InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq:IDCC), a wireless research and development company, will be demonstrating its Perceptual Pre-Processing video streaming solutions during the 2014 CableLabs Summer Conference (August 4-5 in Keystone, CO).

During the conference, the InterDigital team will demonstrate complex video clips both before and after Perceptual Pre-Processing, side-by-side, for 4K HEVC encoded content. InterDigital’s unique Perceptual Pre-Processing solution proactively filters out parts of visual content that the human eye cannot see to deliver equivalent perceived quality while reducing bit rates and delivering up to 45 percent bandwidth savings.

When tested in InterDigital’s video streaming and processing lab in San Diego, use of Perceptual Pre-Processing yielded impressive bandwidth savings at various streams:

“InterDigital’s video solutions can benefit TV service providers, OTT content providers and encoding vendors, without sacrificing visual quality for consumers,” said James J. Nolan, Executive Vice President, InterDigital Solutions. “Attendees at CableLabs will have the chance to visually compare video streams that have, and haven’t, been processed and learn first hand the astonishing bandwidth savings to be achieved.”

“Providing ubiquitous UHD 4K over broadcast, satellite, cable, or streamed via the Internet will require enormous infrastructure improvements –and potentially significant costs,” said Jason Blackwell, Director of Service Provider Strategies at Strategy Analytics, a leading industry research firm. “This is why a reduction in bandwidth while preserving quality will be even more pressing with UHD 4K content, and especially when broadcasting live events. Technologies like InterDigital’s Perceptual Pre-Processing could prove to be an important element in an overall solution.”

CableLabs Summer Conference is a private conference for registered cable operators and demonstrating vendors.
