MADRID — Vodafone Spain has announced the launch of the country’s first 5G commercial services on June 15th in 15 cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Malaga, Zaragoza, Bilbao, Vitoria, San Sebastian, La Coruña, Vigo, Gijón, Pamplona, Logroño and Santander. Vodafone thus becomes the first operator to provide 5G services to its clients in Spain and one of the pioneers in the European market.

The service offers download speeds of up to 1Gbps at launch increasing to up to 2 Gbps by the end of the year – ten times the speed of existing 4G networks.

5G reduces latency to less than 5 milliseconds in ideal conditions, allows the number of objects connected to the network to increase by a factor of 100 and enables the development of new multimedia services and applications that require ultra-fast connections such as autonomous cars, virtual reality gaming, telemedicine and 8K video. It will allow the development of smart cities and business and public administration services in automotive, health, emergency response, energy, as well as enabling other business models linked to the Internet of Things.

Vodafone acquired 90MHz of contiguous spectrum in the 3.7GHz band at auction in July 2018, and has the most spectrum available in Spain for new 5G services.
