- Environmentally sustainable, R180 RDK Video Accelerator helps Pay TV operators effectively add streaming apps
CAMBRIDGE, UK — Amino, the global media and entertainment technology solutions provider, has completed the certification for its popular R180 set-top box. As a RDK Video Accelerator, carrier-grade set-top box, the RDK community can quickly develop, test, and deliver innovative services as the device has been certified by RDK-M to implement RDK as a defined set of standards. This set-top simplifies consumer access to live, local, linear and OTT content by enabling traditional middleware supported by Amino devices to be run alongside premium OTT services, certified as part of the RDK Video Accelerator program. By pre- integrating the RDK Lightning framework, Metrological App Store, and certifying premium apps, Pay TV operators can add streaming channels to their services without costly and time- consuming bespoke integrations.
The R180 is powered by the next-generation Amlogic S905X4 SoC chip incorporating a high- end GPU to allow UI designers to create a stunning user experience without performance concerns. This product has been developed with sustainability in mind, from energy efficiencies in the supply chain to the recycled packaging and recycled plastics in the RCU and eliminating plastic wrapping from accessories. Coupled with intelligent software design of AminoOS and ultra-low power standby, these set-tops also exceed regulatory environmental requirements.
“Our customers see the advantages of selecting Amino as the backbone of their hybrid Pay TV and OTT service offerings. We have integrated RDK with our hardware so that customers can, for the first time, benefit from an operator-ready RDK-V solution that requires minimal integration and has a short time to market,” said Donald McGarva, CEO, Aferian Group, parent company for Amino. “We intend all our future RDK devices to be Video Accelerator certified so that we deliver a set of standards and features that app developers can rely on. We are excited to leverage our RDK Preferred Plus membership to further RDK innovation through collaboration.”
RDK is an open-source software platform that standardizes core functions used in video, broadband, and IoT connected devices. By standardizing these functions, service providers can develop and deploy applications and services, independent of hardware platforms. RDK enables service providers to control their device diagnostics data, business models, and apps to improve the customer experience and drive business results. The Preferred Plus members enhance the RDK stack through collaboration and contributions that drive innovation and speed to market for global service providers of all types.
“Support from a market leader like Amino helps expand RDK deployment opportunities for a wide range of operators across the globe,” said Jason Briggs, President & GM of RDK. “Amino’s new RDK Video Accelerator provides an innovative solution to help operators simplify service deployments and deliver compelling video experiences to their customers.” Amino will be showcasing its RDK solutions at IBC 2022 and the RDK Global Summit held in Amsterdam in September.
