DVB Native IP published as ETSI standard ahead of IBC2024

The DVB specification for native IP broadcasting, DVB-NIP, has been published by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) as TS 103 876 V1.1.1. The publication came just ahead of the annual IBC Show in Amsterdam, where several exhibitors are demonstrating the new standard in action across a range of use cases.

DVB-NIP enables standards-based OTT delivery on DVB broadcast networks, whether satellite or terrestrial. It reduces the cost and complexity of media distribution by enabling the use of a single converged platform to feed both IP and broadcast networks. It also improves sustainability by eliminating duplicated streaming sessions.

Initial interest in DVB-NIP has come from the satellite industry. Typical applications include:

• In-home multiscreen – DVB Native IP can be leveraged for a modernized DTH satellite platform, enabling content delivery to all screens including mobile devices.
• Public access points – in communities, hospitality venues or mobility scenarios (maritime, long-distance transport, …), DVB-NIP hotspots can serve high-quality linear OTT, even at peak hours, as well as video-on-demand, for instance pushed during off-peak hours.
• Distance education – in areas where broadband infrastructure is insufficient for distance learning, DVB-NIP can facilitate the delivery of education services over satellite using educational applications that can be adapted by governments.

DVB-I updated

Another of the DVB Project’s suite of IP-centric solutions, the DVB-I specification for internet-based service discovery, was also published this month by ETSI, in this case as an update (TS 103 770 V1.2.1) to the original specification.

DVB-I services will be demonstrated by a range of exhibitors at IBC2024, in some cases combined with DVB-NIP.

As a first for IBC2024, a “bring your own device” demo of DVB-I is also available, with a service list containing channels hosted by a range of different DVB Member companies
