IBC2018: SERAPHIC showcases Content Substitution

At IBC2018, SERAPHIC will showcase BBC R&D’s Content Substitution example application. It reveals that specific linear broadcast program is able to be replaced with IP-delivered alternative content and can be used to informally test a TV’s implementation of the relevant HbbTV 2 functionality for its ability to perform content substitution in a reliable and timely manner.

This application is developed by BBC R&D and one important purpose is to verify or find out qualified devices which can support mandatory requirements to implement this Content Substitution or IP Insertion. The time to switch streams is carried a file in a DSM-CC carousel, which is widely used by HbbTV from the early specification version. IP based contents replacement leverages advanced HbbTV 2 features, like Media Synchronization, etc.

Working closely with BBC R&D, SERAPHIC successfully supports this engineering prototype application on the mainstream DTV platforms, convincing the broadcasters the necessity to consider commercial applications for business benefit. Commercial broadcasters can develop their own applications to enable use cases such as targeting of advertisements based on audience personalization.
