BERLIN — VUDU, a subscription-free video-on-demand service, and castLabs, a digital video technology and services company, have collaborated to bring VUDU’s collection of the latest movies and TV to Google’s Chromecast. Now available, this enables customers to tap into their personal device’s potential to send their VUDU content to their TV screens. With castLabs’ software, this has positioned VUDU as the first UltraViolet provider to add Chromecast support.

Chromecast is a small plug-in device that lets consumers stream video from their smartphone, tablet, or computer directly to a television. VUDU has taken the opportunity to extend support of its service to this platform to let users conveniently watch their favorite movies and shows on their home TV. To power the Chromecast support, castLabs has provided VUDU with their MPEG-DASH expertise where DASH streams are used to pass HD content to the TV. The streams are also protected using castLab’s cloud-based service, DRMtoday, utilizing Microsoft PlayReady and Google Widevine digital rights management systems.

“We’re committed to ensuring our clients can distribute their digital content in a manner that’s convenient for their customers. VUDU offers a leading video-on-demand experience and our relationship with them has enabled the delivery of their HD video to a new device that consumers are excited about,” said Michael Stattmann, Managing Director of castLabs. “Our work with VUDU reinforces our dedication to help businesses quickly adopt new platforms and standards.”
