Tata Elxsi Licenses the Reference Design Kit to Accelerate Development of Next-Generation Multi-Screen TV Products

BANGALORE, India — Tata Elxsi, a world leader in product engineering and innovation-led design services, announced that it has licensed the RDK (Reference Design Kit) from Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK). It will work with MSOs to optimize and enhance software and provide software development, integration and testing services for SOC (system-on-a-chip) and OEM vendors.

The RDK is a pre-integrated software bundle that creates a common framework for powering tru2way®, IP or hybrid set-top boxes and video gateway devices. It accelerates the development and deployment of next-generation video services such as cloud-based functionality and improved guide experiences. Comcast licenses the RDK to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), semiconductor manufacturers, software vendors, software integrators and multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) to create a community of innovators focused on bringing rich, multi-screen TV home entertainment experiences to consumers faster.

“Tata Elxsi’s long association with Comcast and experience with the RDK and tru2way® technologies coupled with our system integration experience for advanced media gateways and multi-screen digital TV devices will enable customers to cut down their time-to-market significantly,” said M Thangarajan, Vice President and Head of Tata Elxsi’s Broadcast BU. “Customers will benefit from our global presence across North America, Latam, Europe and Asia, and our world-class engineering teams in India, allowing for rapid integration and deployment with lowered development costs and risk.”

Tata Elxsi’s rich experience with development and integration over open platforms such as Linux, HTML5 and QT, as well as proprietary platforms, like Microsoft SilverLight and Adobe Flash, enables customers with a single partner to support them from development to deployment.

Tata Elxsi brings over 15 years of specialized experience of working with SoC (System-on-chip) vendors, OEMs and MSOs, and a team of over 3500+ R&D and engineering professionals for product development, integration, testing and deployment support.

“Our goal is to make the RDK available to companies such as Tata Elxsi in order to accelerate development of an advanced software solution throughout the industry and across geographies,” said Steve Reynolds, senior vice president, CPE and Home Network for Comcast. “Support from Tata Elxsi and others is helping to pave the way for broader industry adoption and deployment of this platform that enables developers, operators and device vendors to create rich, multi-screen TV home entertainment experiences and bring them to consumers faster.”
